Summitt gives $600,000 to Tennessee universities

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee women's basketball Coach Pat Summitt has donated $600,000 to the university, school officials announced.

The donation will be split between the Knoxville and Martin campuses. It includes a $100,000 endowed scholarship for a Lady Vols basketball graduate assistant in honor of Summitt's parents, Richard and Hazel Head.

"I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to play basketball as a student-athlete at UT Martin and spend 35 years as a coach at UT Knoxville," Summitt said in a statement. "I appreciate every opportunity both schools have given me and hope this gift will afford other young women the same opportunities."

Summitt has won eight national titles at UT. Her 983 wins are the most in college basketball history.

She is the third UT coach to make a substantial donation to the university in the past year.

Men's basketball Coach Bruce Pearl endowed a scholarship to honor former Volunteers basketball player Dane Bradshaw. Football Coach Phillip Fulmer and his wife, Vicky, announced a $1 million gift to be split between academic and athletics to support scholarships, athletic facilities and programming.
